Unionism

I too am a product of early Union experience. Unions were the only instrument of protection that existed for our workers early in our 20th century. Since the 1970's they began to semand excessive wages and "rights". When I worked in the Automotive industry in the late 1990's an unskilled laborer earned about $25/hour. Skilled tradesmen earned about 25%+ more. I'm sure the wages are substantially higher now. Thats why there is no real auto industry in this country now. Of course they went to Mexico and China and other low wage countries to produce autos and auto parts.

about the union

I just want you yo know how I fell, about what you have to say. Years ago, we had child labor and no minium wage in this country. Pepole stood up to the industriale companys, and said no more, they unionized and became one. Now, we as a country, have grown apart. The unions have giving us a way of life that you yourself also enjoy. We as a union have given the term of middle class. With out them, there would be only to two classes, high class and lower class(poor).
So before you cut the union, think how they have help you out in your life or how they have been involved in your past family's life, to make life better.

Unionism

It is obvious that you have never been involved in anything else, other than listening to the big union boys, therefore you have only learned one side of a two/three sided system. I live in a "Right To Work State" (Thank God). I was forced to join a union because my organization was awarded a government contract. I lost all my previously held benefits, received a 2 cent per hour pay raise and was charged $21.00 per month for the priviledge of union membership, a 2 cent per hour raise and loss of all benefits. I never had the displeasure of hearing from or seeing a representative of the union until a year later when they sent a letter telling me they were going to increase my union dues.. ...
HAVE YOU NOT NOTICED ALL THE COMPANIES LEAVING THE USA???????????
WHY ARE THEY LEAVING? The companies cannot afford to pay you overpaid union stooges the wages and benefits you receive for setting on your buts and cry because you are not taking in more money per pay period. When the union broke General Motors and Chrysler, who was forced to dig them out of the hole? It certainly was not you overpaid union stooges, it was us other folks that got nailed instead of you folks taking a minor $2.00 to $3.00 per hour pay cut and saving your own company, you sat back and cryed and your union purchasd president sent money to keep you employed. Now the rest of the USA has to pay your high wages and repay the loan so you can receive your unjustified wage scale, and cry for more. THERE WAS ABSOLUTELY NO REASON THAT THE GOVERNMENT NEEDED TO BAIL GM AND CHRYSLER OUT. YOU OVERPAID UNDER WORKED BUMS COULD HAVE TAKEN CARE OF IT YOURSELF IF YOU WERE ADULTS INSTEAD OF A BUNCH OF SPOILED BRATS.

They have lost their way

Unfortunately, though unions originally were a good thing, they have over the years thrust more demands than reasonable upon businesses. They have structured demands that continually grow through entitlements. The end result is that the benefits and pensions that have been granted as a neccessity to keep the unions happy are now reaching an unsustainable level. If unions were restricted to negotiation of wage and saftey issues, perhaps that would be sufficient, but look around at the governments and businesses that are struggling, and you will find unions behind the disaster.

I quit my job because of the union

I never want to work at a unionized place again. It was like trying to please 2 different bosses. People were threatened if they did not want to do what the union wanted. We could not get rid of people who came in drunk, or routinely called in "sick". I took a $10,000 pay cut to go to another job. I feel safe and less stressed at my non-unionized job.

I appreciate the balance that unions originally helped bring to the free market system, but I am fed up with them now. We have enough protections in place that we rarely need unions anymore.

Mega-ditto!!!! I just took

Mega-ditto!!!!

I just took an early out from the USPS for the same reason.
As a long-term Acting Supervisor, I became bewildered by employees lack of cooperation and laziness on the job. Not to mention, the false claims of Injury on the job.

I am currently looking for new employment outside of the government unionized system.

Union

I had an opportunity to join an union. I got smart, insteat, and I join the high cass.

Union Member of I.O.U.E. #3

You've been sipping the union kool-aid. NO ONE should ever have to pay to have or keep a job! I'm a Texan and hell would freeze over if I ever paid union leaches anything from any money I've earned.

Child labor & minimum wage...

I had a newspaper route, an egg route, and mowed lawns when I was 8 or 9 years old. I learned the value of work, earned income, and controlling expenses. I was not forced to work. Today, my children are prevented from learning many of these same life lessons because of State laws, and as a result, young adults entering the work force do not possess some of the more subtle attributes of a productive member of society such as timeliness, taking pride in their work and product, etc.

As to miminum wage law, it could be considered as a minimum unemployment law. High unemployment rates of minorities, and young adults bear witness to this fact. Businesses don't have an endless supply of money. For every item a business spends money on, there must be sales to pay for it, else the business will be bankrupt and cease to exist. Artificially increasing the minimum bid/offer for labor(by intervening in a private mutually beneficial two party contract between employer and employee) the government(s) mandate that a certain percentage of people will be unemployable. This is because their (the potential employees') skill set, and potential output does not justify the expense of contracting their labor.

I am not denying that unions have had a some positive moments in the past. But to say that the Nation achieved its greatness because of unions is an outlandish overstatement of facts. It would be more accurate to say that it is the freedom enjoyed by individuals to pursue and achieve their individual goals, and enjoy the fruits of their labor without the heavy hand of government and union intervention, looting and mooching.

Unions

Amen! I agree that there was a time, many years ago when unions had a purpose, but that has long since passed and, not surprisingly, corruption, the mob, and government have since used the unions for their own gratification. Unions, in fact, have been a deterrent to free market forces for more than 70 years. It's time for them to take their rightful place in oblivion. Now Andy Stearn is using the power of the Obama Presidency to drive his Marxism across the country and even across the world. When the average wage of the government employee is $70K and that of the private worker is $40K, it is patently obvious that something other than free market forces are in play.

I hope and pray that we can kick out the Progressives in 2010 and 2012, but to repair their damage we are going to have to elect people with the cajones to do some serious damage control. I would like to see most of the gov't bureacracies deleted or de-funded. You could start with the EPA, HUD, and drastically lower the budgets on organizations like the FCC. Wouldn't it be a hoot to cut the IRS budget by 2/3rd's? And, it goes without saying, that we need to lower taxes, capital gains, by record amounts to get this country back on its feet. Repeal Obamacare and all of the other illegal Executive Orders he has spewed out. It would also be nice to see a party that returns to the Constitution and stands up against actions that are contrary to Constitutional law. Tort reform is badly needed. Make it a law that the loser pays all legal fees in law suits. In fact make the attorney pay!

about the union

You do have some true statements of fact in what you said, but only few! Long ago, before there were fair labor laws and such in place we did have all sorts of bad things, and yes indeed, the unions in general forced the issue to the front where government (of the people, by the people, and for the people) had to pay attention and change things for the good.

However, long ago, unions became one of the THE MOST corrupt organizations in this nation. They have scammed their own people for decades, and even now are raping them..... figuring that the workers are too stupid to see what they are doing, even as they, "Do it to them!" They have stolen billions in the rape of the retirement funds taken for personal and political purposes instead of what is promised!!! The workers?? To sleepy and stupid to even notice that they are being hung out to dry by their own union(s) - worse than any employer ever. Sad.

Wake up! Get off the drugged "tea wagon" and see what they are doing to the workers of this nation under the guise of helping them. I was a union shop steward and I paid attention: lots of promises and few realities!!!

Forced into useless unions!

In California my homehealth care worker was forced to sign up for, and pay union dues. It is the same union she had to join as a school cafeteria worker. They do NOTHING for her, but collect dues, so they can agitate and scream for illegals. They are the loudest voice for amnesty. They want more members so they can collect more dues and live "high-on-the-hog." SEIU in California, is so crooked they even steal from their so-called-charity.

At one time unions were very useful, now they are just a leech sucking off of the worker's pay check. Laws in all the states, protect the rights of the worker.

California Unions have sucked the state dry, and especial the teachers unions, refuse to consider anything but the welfare of the teacher. THEIR TIME IS PAST. GET RID OF THEM.

discussion

I was born in Calif in 1960. I remember when it used to be a nice place to work and live. I would not live there now if you paid me to. The mind set of the liberal politicians and union bosses have ruined the state. I have worked all over the country and the best places to work and live are right to work states. When I was working in Kansas City, union punks who called me a scab, sabotaged my work, slashed tires, and made life very difficult. They accused me of stealing their work. What was at the center of the issue was that I was working cirlces around them and making them look bad.I am a contractor and time is money. The quality of my work was superior and they just could not stand it.It is sad that there really is two Americas, those who want to live free and earn their own way and those who want too skate by with doing the least necessary and wanting someone else to carry their load. Unions are at the center of why so many jobs have left this country. Wage price sprial index boys and girls. Unions have not been benficial for the good of this country for a long time. Unions cry about greed of companies, take a good look in the mirror union members.

About the Union

While it's true that the unions,in the beginning, helped workers to achieve better pay and benefits, they have out lived their usefulness. The union leaders are now the fat cats taking huge salaries for themselves and putting companies out of business by their excessive demands.

unions

The unions were a good institution at the beginning. They worked to get reasonable hours for reasonable pay. They have morphed into an elephant in the room lately. They want more and more power over workers and companies. They are more interested in growing power than helping workers. Like the government they are on a takeover and spend binge. It is time to tamp them down to a reasonable level.

unions

I agree with the California problem. My daughter takes care of my mom who is in her 70's with dementia. My daughter gets a small stipend from the state for doing this, and she was forced into joining their "union" when she didn't want to. Californians vote on issues on the ballot and when they are passed if the unions don't like the new law they simply use the union dues paid by the workers and take it to court to have it repealed or declared unconstitional. Teachers unions are the absolute worst. I also agree that at one time unions were an enforcer of workers rights that were needed in this country. Now they are nothing but another political machine. They need to be knocked out or taken back to what they were, an enforcer of workers rights. They have no business funding political campaigns.
